Here it comes…

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

I’ve heard you’ve been sitting at your computers since January, pint of your favorite flavor in hand, hoping a new entry from The Scoop will pop up in your RSS feeds. That day has finally arrived, faithful Marblers.

Let me introduce myself: I’m Jane, new writer for the Scoop, here to keep you up to date on all the Blue Marble news. You may have met me at our Atlantic Avenue location— smiling at you from behind the counter despite being coated in grass-fed organic dairy up to my elbows.

Jennie and Alexis have brought me on as writer and I couldn’t be more excited. There will be much more for you to read on here in the coming weeks— stay tuned for flavor profiles, staff picks and recipes, the inside scoop on the Rwanda project and even more to whet your appetite for our delicious ice cream (as if you needed it).

FREE REFILLS

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Blue Marble is going back to the tap! In a new effort to conserve our earth’s precious resources, and to prevent unnecessary waste, we are no longer selling bottled water in plastic containers. It turns out that the best drinking water in New York City is available straight from the faucet, with the help of a filter!

Did you know that up to 40% of bottled water is just reprocessed tap water? Bottled water is not tested by any government agency. Meanwhile, NYC’s drinking water is some of the cleanest, most heavily regulated in the country. Check out the free, annual water quality report published online.

The inspiration to be bottled-water-free came from the fabulous film ‘Flow’. Check out their website for theatre information, or put it at the top of your Netflix list. Other great resources for water enlightenment include Take Back the Tap and Food and Water Watch.

To make the change easier for all you thirsty folks, we offer cups of water for 25 cents – although we are promoting the fact that water is free, our biodegradable cups, unfortunately, are not! Save money by bringing in your own reusable cup or mug, and we’ll fill it up as many times as you like at no charge.

What did you say? You don’t have a reusable mug? Then it’s high time you saved yourself some money and took some plastic off the streets. We are proud to sell bottles from Klean Kanteen (in two fabulous Blue Marble colors): they are made of 100% recyclable, high quality, food grade stainless steel, and don’t need a special lining like some other metal bottles. They are completely BPA-free and won’t leach chemicals, toxins, or funky flavors into your water, coffee, or milkshake. Plus, they weigh only 8 oz. and are incredibly durable, so you can reuse yours for years!

BIG news

Friday, September 19th, 2008

In the past week, two very generous donors were so moved by Sweet Dreams that they have come forward with an offer to match all donations raised during the next thirty days up to $20,000. Yes, you read that right: TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS.

The clock on this incredible opportunity for our funding starts NOW. From today until October 19, if you donate $10, it will be matched and become $20. If you give $100, it will become $200.  Our goal is to raise the total amount, $20,000, which will be doubled to $40,000!

If enough people give just a small amount, this is POSSIBLE! If some consider a donation of $50 or more, it is LIKELY!!

We are deeply invigorated by this tremendous injection of faith and confident that those of you who believe in this very special project will come forward to match your sentiments of support with a pledge of your own.

To donate now (and double your money!) please visit www.bluemarbledreams.org. With a simple click of the mouse, you will help us spread the Blue Marble love to Rwanda.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

To enable our cross-Atlantic leap, we have created Blue Marble Dreams, a nonprofit bridge that will allow us to reach Huye and, ultimately, many other communities across the globe. Through these international adventures, we will pursue a very sweet but pragmatic dream: to explore the transformative potential of ice cream not just as a source of fun and joy but also as a means of sustainable economic growth in developing countries with local but underutilized dairy resources.

While we are working toward securing Blue Marble Dreams’ tax-exempt status, African Services Committee, a fantastic NYC-based nonprofit organization serving the needs of our African immigrant friends and neighbors, has graciously offered to serve as our fiscal sponsor. This means that they will process all donations on our behalf and issue all donors an official tax deduction receipt. So your donation will be FULLY TAX DEDUCTIBLE.

Please visit www.bluemarbledreams.org TODAY and join us in giving the Huye community a wonderful place to come together and indulge in a sweet dream we can all believe in.

Blue Marble Dreams: Rwanda

Friday, September 12th, 2008

Jennie and Alexis in front of Atlantic Ave. shop

Thank you to all of our friends, neighbors, and compatriots in spirit, for your hundreds of emails and comments in support of our new nonprofit venture, Blue Marble Dreams: Rwanda. Today, the Brooklyn Paper carried a feature story on us, which made us feel proud: www.brooklynpaper.com/stories.

Also, we have received shout-outs on numerous facebook pages and blogs, including Satya Bhabha’s page (thank you, Satya!) and this wonderful blog by our friend Jake: www.moreperfectmarket.com/2008/08/smile-and-ice-cream.html.

To find out more information on the project, or to offer support, please email thescoop@bluemarbleicecream.com, and we will be in touch with you shortly. In the meantime, here’s some inspiration from our friend, Odile Gakire Katese, who explains why she believes her community needs ice cream:

"Because we struggle most of the time, we also find ourselves aggressive against happiness, love, joy, life. When we have children, we too teach them that happiness doesn't exist; that there is no pure love and as legacy, we give them our despair, our debts, our doubts, our tears, our failures... The Rwandan women who are part of this group want to rehsape life in its simple and sweetest form.  We want to share moments that are not embossed by despair and death... We want to create a space where poverty, disease, illiteracy... are not obstacles to happiness and barriers between human beings... We have to, for the sake of the health of our soul.  The ice cream will have the power to reconcile people with life by providing privileged moments when life reminds them that it is also sweet.  And for the 15th commemoration of the genocide in 2009, what better way for Rwandans to enjoy life than by traveling all over the country through the thousand hills to offer life when there was death, to offer a smile and an ice cream?  Nice dream!"

let us eat ice cream

Wednesday, September 10th, 2008

We love our neighbors, so it’s no surprise that we’re proponents of eating locally. And when Just Food asked us to participate in their local food tasting event at Water Taxi Beach, we said ‘ Heck, yes!”Let Us Eat Local’ was held last night (and had been sold out by the time we signed on, in case any of you are wondering why we didn’t tell you sooner), and we were delighted and charmed by the atmosphere, guests, and other participating restaurants and vendors. It was a treat for us to hand out samples and watch the reactions of those who had never experienced such divine dairy. We are thankful to Just Food and to all the event’s guests for showing their support, and hope to visit with all of you again in the future. To learn more about food and farming in and around our urban jungle, put on your reading glasses: www.justfood.org.In other frosty news, some of you may already have heard that our participation in the American Express Members Project competition did not come to fruition. Our project was not chosen as one of the twenty-five finalists…so why do we feel like such winners?! Because the contest generated SO much inspiration and positive momentum for us. We have received offers for private funding, made contact with dairy sources in Rwanda, heard from equipment manufactuers offering potential sponsorship, secured a fiscal sponsor, connected with agricultural development programs in the region, piqued the interest of local media, received offers from volunteers around the globe, and, most importantly, shown Odile Gakire Katese (Kiki) and her community that OUR community CARES about their well being. With or without American Express, we will bring this taste of sweetness to our neighbors in Rwanda!!We want to thank you once again for your incredible and overwhelming response to our request for support. Please stay tuned as we put the system in place to further engage you in the exciting developments ahead. Lots of love to you all from our ever-expanding Blue Marble family.

Vote for Blue!

Friday, August 29th, 2008

In case you haven’t heard yet about our latest project, read on and spread the word…

Encouraged by a friend in Rwanda yearning to bring joy and laughter to her community, we are launching a nonprofit to start a shop in this developing country where milk is a natural but relatively untapped resource.

To help make this happen, we ARE NOT asking for money, we are asking for your VOTE.

American Express has launched an initiative called Members Project, which invites cardmembers to post their dreams of change online for the chance of winning funding to help them come true. AmEx is devoting $2.5 million to the winners, so the stakes are high!

Our project is called “Sweet Dreams: The Power of Ice Cream.” Please click on this link to learn more and to CAST YOUR VOTE FOR OUR DREAM. It is simple and takes only seconds. A minimal investment for such a worthwhile endeavor!

http://www.membersproject.com/project/view/FY1ZKE

You can also e-mail us at thescoop@bluemarbleicecream.com, and we’ll cast your vote for you!

We are so thankful to all those voters who have made an effort so far, and we want you to know that it is paying off: we are no in the top 5 projects in our category of 357, and in the top 20 out of almost 1200 total projects! Your support is such an awesome gift that we want to give back – visit either of our shops to grab a scoop and sign up to vote, and you’ll receive a gift certificate for a free mini marble. Branching Out!

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008

Hey hey, Blue Marblers.  Perhaps you’ve already heard, but our ice cream tree is growing!  On Saturday, May 24, Blue Marble will sprout in Prospect Heights.  186 Underhill, between Sterling Place and St. Johns, to be exact.  We have partnered with the clever birds of NYC Explorers to offer you a one-stop shop for all of your playspace/kids’ enrichment programs/sundae/cappuccino needs.  Please take a look at their site, www.nycityexplorers.com, to learn more about all they offer.  Be sure to come by on opening day to get in on the fun!  And come early…free marbles to the first 100 customers, and coffee’s on us all the live long day!  To read more about this exciting development and other breaking Blue Marble news, take a look at the inaugural issue of The Inside Scoop, our periodic attempt to keep you in the know about all of our latest goings on.

Hello Friends!

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

Dear All,Wow. We’re over a month in now, and Alexis and I are just coming up for air to say thank you so much to our community! What an incredible welcome we have received from the young and old, from Brooklynites and Manhattan dwellers alike. We have folks who have traveled by foot from Bed Stuy, by subway from Harlem, and by car from Boston, Long Island, Westchester and… Cobble Hill. We have regulars, each of whom are so appreciated for their consistency and devotion to our products. The regulars don’t just come for ice cream — we’ve got folks who come regularly for our great espresso and coffee, as well as the awesome selections of teas from In Pursuit of Tea. We have folks who come in with their heart set on our organic sticky buns. And then there’s our faithful neighbor who comes in several times a week for his old fashioned Egg Cream (made with U Bet syrup, of course!).We realize that in spite of being here every day since long before we opened, we have not shown our presence much on the web. It’s time for that to change. This blog is ours. We created our website not only to inform folks about us, but to create a community, a forum for folks to come together and discuss matters that bring us all together. In life, we can all go in different directions, but there are points of intersection that link us all in this crazy web. Still… while we do pride ourselves on creating a great space, our warm hospitality, and our (let’s face it) awesome product, the web is not something Alexis and I are super proficient at… YET. So if anyone has any advice, input, or suggestions of any kind (an in-store tutorial on newsletter formatting in exchange for ice cream, perhaps??), please email us! In the meantime, you’ll see us develop our internet skills the old fashioned way — um… just trying to DO IT.We welcome anyone who wants to start a thread about the neighborhood, about coffee/tea/ice cream, about kids and childcare stuff, about international travel, etc., etc…Happiest of Holidays to All!!And more soon…

Warm and Savories

Monday, December 3rd, 2007

It was 30 degrees on Sunday and Blue Marble was still scooping like crazy. Lauren scooped a double mini for an energized customer last Monday morning at 10:15. If there’s any question about whether people still enjoy ice cream in the cold, I think we’ve found our answer.

Still, we thought it would be a nice idea to offer some warm and savory additions to our menu. We are now serving fresh quiche from Baked in Red Hook, and Moosewood organic soups. Cozy up at Blue Marble with a warm and savory treat!

Not so savory, but certainly warm, is our delicious hot chocolate. Organic milk steamed with our wonderful hot fudge and topped off with organic, grass-fed dairy whipped cream, it is the most delicious hot cocoa ever. Mmmm…
